The landscape of women's reproductive health is often clouded by stigma and misinformation, particularly when it comes to addressing complications post-self-managed abortions. The prevailing notion that women should conceal such experiences from healthcare professionals perpetuates not just danger but also fosters an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. In reality, it is crucial to seek medical assistance promptly if your self-managed abortion encounters unexpected challenges.

Recognizing Potential Complications

The decision to self-manage an abortion comes with potential risks and complications that you should not overlook. From excessive bleeding and infection to incomplete abortion and allergic reactions to medication, being aware of these possibilities is essential for your safety. Here are the details of what could go wrong, and equip you to identify the warning signs and take action if needed.

Seeking Medical Help

Seeking medical help after complications of a self-managed abortion is not something to be ashamed of. Our team emphasizes the importance of reaching out to healthcare professionals without hesitation, especially if you experience:

  • Severe bleeding

  • Passing large blood clots

  • Soaking two or more sanitary pads in an hour

  • Bleeding heavily for 12+ hours

  • Infection symptoms

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Muscle aches and pains

  • High fever

  • No menstrual period for two months following the procedure

  • Pain or discharge in the genital area

  • Stomach pain and swelling

  • Rapid heartbeat

Whether you have typical or severe symptoms, don’t hesitate to go to the emergency room or make an appointment with a medical professional if you feel like something is wrong. We encourage you to be proactive with your health and listen to your body.

CONTINUED SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY

 Symptoms of pregnancy, such as:

  • Nausea

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Frequent urination

  • Metallic taste

  • Breast tenderness usually resolves within a week or two after an abortion

If these symptoms persist, you may still be pregnant. Taking an at-home pregnancy test is not helpful because you can continue to test positive for 4 to 6 weeks after an abortion due to pregnancy hormones that are still in your body. Also, if you began using hormone-based birth control (the Pill, patch, or vaginal ring) right after the abortion, be aware that these contraceptives can cause pregnancy-like symptoms, especially during the first months of use.
